News and Notes From Around College Football for September 8, 2008

Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year
The Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award is back for its third season, and college football fans can again vote for their favorite coaches for an honor that includes $50,000 for the winners' favorite charities and $20,000 for their schools' alumni associations. Liberty Mutual proudly partners with the College Football Hall of Fame to honor one coach from each division who demonstrates excellence on and off the field through victories, community service, charitable endeavors and academic support.


Three 2008 Hall of Famers to be Honored with On-Campus Salutes This Weekend
Coach Lou Holtz, Wyoming's Jay Novacek and Texas Tech's Dave Parks will be honored this Saturday with On-Campus Salutes in celebration of their induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Coach Holtz will be celebrated in South Bend, Ind., as Notre Dame hosts Michigan at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBC. He is the only coach in NCAA history to lead six different programs to bowl games and led the Fighting Irish to the 1988 National Championship and 100 wins. NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell will represent the Foundation at the event.

Novacek, a consensus First Team All-America selection who amassed 83 receptions for 1,536 yards and 10 touchdowns in his three-year career, set an NCAA record for average yards per reception by a tight end (22.6) as a senior. Wyoming will take on North Dakota State at 3:00 p.m. ET in Laramie. NFF Director of Special Projects Hillary Jeffries will take part in the presentation.

Texas Tech will honor Parks in Lubbock during the Red Raiders' tilt with SMU at 7:00 p.m. ET on FSN Southwest. Parks is the first Tech player to ever make the Associated Press' All-America First Team and to receive All-Southwest Conference honors twice, while establishing nearly every Texas Tech receiving record. The NFF's representative will be Chief Operating Officer Matthew Sign.

The NFF's Greater Atlanta Chapter announced its continued partnership with the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The chapter will present the "George Morris 2008 High School Scholar-Athlete Scholarships" to Georgia high school senior scholar- athletes and scholar-student managers in honor of the late George Morris, former chapter president and 1981 Hall of Fame inductee from Georgia Tech. The scholarships are funded in part by Texaco, Gallagher Electric and The Atlanta Falcons Youth Organization. The Nebraska Football Hall of Fame, which is sponsored by the Nebraska Chapter of the NFF, will introduce its 2008 class at the New Mexico State game this Saturday. Members of Notre Dame's 1953 national championship team reunited at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend last Friday. 1979 Hall of Fame inductee and Heisman Trophy recipient Johnny Lattner and other members of the squad signed autographs during the first of six "Football Fridays at the Hall"

Rutgers, one of the closest NCAA FBS schools to New York's Ground Zero, will hold a moment of silence to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedies prior to the RU-UNC game. A New Jersey National Guard Army General will escort the Scarlet Knight captains onto the field for the pregame coin toss, and a stadium flyover is scheduled. Rutgers also will play a video tribute to soldiers deployed overseas at halftime.Oklahoma extended the nation's longest home winning streak to 20 games with its win over Cincinnati. The Sooners are also using FanChatter photos of fans and alumni to post on its new football LED message boards... Purdue's Joe Tiller tied Jack Mollenkopf for the most wins in school history (84) with the Boilermakers win over Northern Colorado last weekend... Florida hosted a record crowd at the Swamp, as 90,833 watched the Gators intrastate win over Miami... Syracuse will premiere "The Express" this Friday, a movie based on College Football Hall of Fame inductee Ernie Davis... Virginia wore "retro" 1984-93 vintage uniforms in last week's home contest vs. Richmond... Colorado held "Ralphie Week" to celebrate its 75th year on the Buffaloes' nickname and to applaud the Buffs' live mascot... UCF is promoting "Do the Knight Thing" to assist with sportsmanship for student-athletes and fans. The Knights also are selling wristbands to benefit the Central Florida Children's Home... Duke has moved its McDonald's Youth Day activities to a Sept. 27 home outing vs. Virginia... Bowling Green coaches and student-athletes handed out free submarine sandwiches in front of the school's student union to thank the student body and faculty for their support... Wisconsin has established a "Think Green, Wear Red" program to assist with additional recycling and conservation at 2008 football games. The Badgers won their 16th straight game at Camp Randall Stadium against Marshall last Saturday... Connecticut and Tennessee will play a two-game series in 2015 and '16... The Texas A&M-Commerce-East Central (Texas) matchup at the Cotton Bowl on Oct. 18 will be named the "Harvey Martin Classic" after the East Texas State and Dallas Cowboy standout... Colorado State has teamed with McDonald's in the "I'm Lovin' the Rams" promotion, offering free admission to the first 200 kids under age 10 at home football games... NFF Board Member Jerry Jones (Arkansas), Dallas Cowboys' owner for 19 years, captured the Lamar Hunt Award - the highest honor given by the Dallas All Sports Association at its 2008 Banquet of Champions. The Emmitt Smith Award (named in honor of the 2006 College Football Hall of Fame inductee and Florida grad) was presented to Mike Modano of the Dallas Stars... Texas announced the 2008 inductees into its Men's Longhorn Hall of Honor, which include football standouts Mike Baab, Dan Neil, Knox Nunnally, and Ed Padgett... Columbia's second Athletics Hall of Fame class includes New York Giants' team physician and former NFF Board Member Dr. Russell Warren, Marty Domres and Bruce Gehrke... Eric Turner of UCLA will be inducted into the Bruins' Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 3... Virginia Tech has selected football star Eugene Chung for its '08 Sports Hall of Fame class...
