This Week in College Football History

DALLAS -- September 3, 2008 - As part of an on- going series throughout the fall, The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame posts in advance This Week in College Football History, which takes a look back at some of college football's landmark moments over the last 139 years. During the season, many of these events are featured in a changing exhibit at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind.

FEATURED MOMENT:
Sept. 9, 1972:
Unranked UCLA stuns No. 1 Nebraska, ending the Huskers' 23-game winning streak. With the game tied 17-17, Bruins quarterback Mark Harmon (1973 NFF National Scholar-Athlete) leads a 57-yard drive, setting up 30-yard field goal by kicker Efren Herrera with 22 seconds left for a 20-17 win in Los Angeles.

OTHER NOTABLE DATES:

Sept. 8, 1990: Virginia beats Clemson 20-7, breaking a 29-game losing streak to the Tigers. In the third quarter, Cavaliers' Jason Wallace returns a punt 79 yards allowing for quarterback Shawn Moore's 12- yard touchdown to seal the victory in Charlottesville, Va.

Sept. 10, 1983: Alabama beats Georgia Tech in the debut of new Crimson Tide head coach Ray Perkins, who replaced future College Football Hall of Fame Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. The team wore houndstooth hat decals on their helmets in honor of Coach Bryant, as Bama wins 20-7 in Birmingham. Tailback Robert Lavette helps the Yellow Jackets avoid a shutout by scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown, tying a school-record four TDs rushing in a game.

Sept. 11, 1982: Future College Football Hall of Fame linebacker Wilber Marshall leads Florida to an upset over No. 10 Southern California 17-9. Marshall has 14 tackles and four sacks, as the Gator defense held the Trojans to only 84 yards on the ground.

Sept. 12, 1942: Eastern Army All-Stars beat the New York Giants 16-0 at the Polo Grounds in New York City. As part of the Army Emergency Relief Series, the games were formed between NFL teams and the military All-Stars playing a total of eight games. All revenues went to charity.

Sept. 13, 1986: For the first time since 1934, a new Notre Dame head coach loses in his debut, as Lou Holtz and the Irish fall to Michigan 24-23 in South Bend. ND quarterback Steve Beuerlein completes 21- 33 for 263 yards, breaking Joe Thiesmann's record for career passing yards in front of a capacity crowd (59,075). Although Notre Dame is unranked in the preseason for the first time in 22 years, Holtz and company appear in the Top 20 the following week despite their loss to the Wolverines.

Sept. 14, 1991: San Diego State freshman Marshall Faulk replaces the injured T.C. Wright, scoring seven touchdowns en route to setting a new NCAA record for rushing in a game (386 yards). Breaking future College Football Hall of Famer Anthony Thompson's record of 377 yards rushing, Faulk and the Aztecs beat the University of the Pacific 55-34.
